Sizing

Choosing the right-sized bat is important to a player’s performance and development. Players with less experience should start with lighter bats for better swing control. More experienced players should use a heavier bat to help maximize power. A bat that is too heavy will dramatically reduce swing speed; If a bat is too light, the player could miss out on the extra force that a heavier bat can generate.

Weight

Bat weight is measured in ounces (oz.)

Weight Drop

Weight drop = bat length (in.) – bat weight (oz.)

For example, a 32-inch, 22-ounce bat would have a drop weight of -10.

Typically, the higher the competition or league level, the lesser the weight drop. A lesser weight drop means the bat feels heavier, so a -5 bat will feel heavier than a -10 bat.

Material

The material and composition of a bat is pivotal to its performance. Bats are made of metal, composites, or wood. Metal and composite bats are traditionally used for youth through college baseball. Wood is used at the professional level, as well as within amateur and travel baseball leagues.

Wood

  • Maple bats are very dense and hard, offering little flex for solid contact
  • Ash bats have a larger sweet spot and more flex, providing a “trampoline effect”
  • Bamboo bats are highly durable, and preferred for batting practice and by power hitters

Metal Composite

  • Layered construction allows for varying swing weight
  • Large sweet spot provides more pop
  • Two-piece design minimizes vibration and sting

Metal Alloy

  • Made from a mixture of two or more metals
  • Stiffer feel through swing zone
  • Durable material is made to last longer

League Rules

Leagues adopt standards set forth by governing bodies, like USSSA and USA Baseball. It’s important to select a bat that’s compliant with the league’s rules and regulations. Rawlings bats are stamped with logos identifying the standard that they meet. League adoptions vary by region, so we recommend consulting your coach and/or league official prior to purchasing a new bat.

The Velo Bat

Speed and great control makes the Velo bat ideal for top-of-the-lineup hitters. A stiffer handle and lighter swing weight increases bat speed, so table setters can catch up to faster pitches.

The 5150 Bat

Our utility player of bats, the 5150 is made for any hitter in the lineup. A single-piece alloy design and huge sweet spot create a balanced feel and provide plenty of pop.
